Low, Sculptural Coffee Tables Worth Building a Room Around

There is a kind of coffee table that does more than hold a cup. It sits low, it is sculptural, and it quietly sets the character of the whole room. You notice the room before you notice the table, which is the highest compliment furniture can be paid.

Three designs from our collection show how different materials each do this in their own way: hand cast bronze, tinted glass and stitched leather.

The Forged Oval Coffee Table Bronze Nera

The Forged Oval Coffee Table Bronze Nera is the most quietly architectural of the three. Its base is hand cast in solid bronze using the traditional lost wax technique, and its top is bronze tinted tempered glass.

The lost wax process is worth a word, because it explains why the table looks the way it does. Artisans model the form in wax, encase it in refractory material, then heat it so the wax runs out and leaves a mould for the molten bronze. After casting, each base is sanded, chased and finished by hand. The result keeps the organic texture of the process, and no two bases are quite the same.

At 135 cm long, 70 cm deep and 38 cm high, it sits low and generous. The Bronze Nera finish is deep and moody, and the tinted glass top lets light travel across the surface rather than stopping at it. In a room with pale upholstery or a pale rug, it grounds everything.

The Cube Coffee Table Pumice Leather

The Cube Coffee Table Pumice Leather takes a different route to the same end. Its top is a square of pumice leather, 100 by 100 cm, on a recessed black wood base, at 40 cm high.

The interest here is contrast. The soft neutral leather against the architectural black base gives the table a presence that reads as tailored rather than loud. Leather also ages: the surface develops a subtle patina over the years, so the table grows more individual rather than more worn.

Because the top is a full metre square, it carries real styling: a tray, a stack of books, a sculptural object, all with room to spare. In a room with slim-lined seating, it is the piece that adds weight and calm.

The Spike Oval Coffee Table Bronze Nera

The Spike Oval Coffee Table Bronze Nera is the boldest of the three. Its base is a hand cast bronze spike form in Bronze Nera, again made with the lost wax technique, and its top is gold tinted tempered glass.

The contrast is the point. The dark, textured bronze base against the warm luminous glass creates an interplay of dark and light that does the decorating for you. At 130 cm long, 65 cm deep and 40 cm high, it is the most compact of the three, so it suits rooms where the seating is tight or the space between sofa and table is modest.

The oval top softens the drama of the base, which is why this design works in classical rooms as well as contemporary ones. It is a piece you build the seating around rather than drop into an existing scheme.

Which one for your room

A quick way to choose between them:

  • Pale or neutral upholstery? The Forged Oval grounds the room with depth and shadow.
  • Slim modern seating that needs weight? The Cube adds a full square metre of calm surface.
  • A tighter space or a bolder room? The Spike brings the most character per centimetre.

All three sit in the 38 to 40 cm height band, so all three work beside standard sofa seats. Whichever you choose, let the table lead: keep the styling on top spare, a tray, a book, one object, so the base and the material stay the story.

Caring for bronze and glass

Two small habits keep these tables looking their best. Dust the bronze base with a soft dry cloth, and avoid abrasive cleaners, which can affect the hand applied patina. Clean the glass with a microfibre cloth and a gentle glass cleaner. The bronze will develop character over time; that is part of the material's appeal, not a flaw to fix.

You can compare all three side by side in our coffee tables collection, with dimensions on each page. And if you would like a view on which suits your room, our styling and staging service is glad to help.
