How to Style a Console Table Behind Your Sofa
Share
A console table behind a sofa is one of the quietest ways to make a living room feel considered. It gives the back of the sofa a reason to be looked at, hides whatever sits behind it and adds a surface for the pieces that make a room feel finished. If your sofa floats in the middle of the room, it answers the question of what to do with the empty stretch behind it.
Here is how to style one well, from choosing the table to the final lamp.
Why the back of your sofa deserves attention
Most of us style the front of the sofa and forget the back. In an open plan room the sofa back faces the dining area or the kitchen. In a smaller room it faces the wall. Either way it is visible for much of the day, and a bare sofa back can make a whole room feel half dressed.
A console gives that view purpose. It turns dead space into display space and quietly zones the room without a single change to the architecture. It also gives you somewhere to put a lamp, which matters in the evening when a ceiling light alone feels flat and unflattering.
The trick is restraint. A console behind a sofa is seen from both sides of the room, so it needs to look good from the sofa and from across the room. That rules out clutter and anything too tall.
Start with height and depth
The two numbers that matter most are height and depth. The console should sit level with, or just below, the top of the sofa back. Most sofa backs finish between 75 and 85 cm, so a console of 73 to 80 cm sits comfortably beside them. Anything much taller crowds the sofa and anything much lower looks like a missed opportunity.
Depth is about clearances. Keep the console shallow enough that people can still pass behind the sofa without squeezing. Around 40 to 45 cm works behind most sofas and still leaves room for a lamp and one or two objects.
The Valentia 2 Drawer Console gets both numbers right. It measures 160 cm long, 45 cm deep and 79 cm high, with a Bentley faux leather top, warm wood veneer detailing and two drawers that quietly absorb the things that usually clutter a surface.

Build the styling in three layers
A well styled console usually has three layers: something tall, something sculptural and something that catches the light.
Start with the tall piece. A lamp gives height and a warm pool of light after dark. The Splash Ceramic Lamp Grey is hand thrown with a random grey glaze, so no two are quite alike, and at 70 cm high it holds the arrangement without looming over the sofa. It comes without a shade, which lets you match the shade to your room.

Add something sculptural at mid height. Art glass works beautifully here because it changes with the light through the day and never reads as clutter. The Studio Art Glass Waves piece is 42 cm high with a translucent, light reflective finish that suits both classic and contemporary rooms.

Finish with something low and grounding. A small stack of books, a shallow bowl or a single object is enough. If the console sits against a wall, hang a mirror above it to double the lamp light and frame the arrangement.
Keep it useful
A console behind a sofa still has to earn its place. Leave a clear stretch of surface for a cup of coffee or a book. If the table has drawers, keep the remotes and chargers in them rather than drifting across the room. A console that is all display and no function will not stay looking good for long, because everyday things will always find their way back.
Cables are the other small thing that spoils a good arrangement. Choose a lamp position near a socket, or run the cable neatly along the table leg. It takes five minutes and it keeps the whole scheme looking deliberate.
A quick checklist
- Console height level with or just below the sofa back, roughly 73 to 80 cm
- Depth around 40 to 45 cm so the walkway stays clear
- One lamp for height and evening light
- One sculptural piece at mid height
- One reflective piece, a mirror or glass, to catch the light
- A clear stretch of surface left for everyday use
- Cables tucked away and the floor below kept clear
